Spotlight on history: Full Steam Ahead

Many visitors to Lake George enjoy the variety of cruises available on the region's passenger boats. Probably most famous is the steam boat.

The Lake George Steamboat Company began to operate as a commerical shipping company on Lake George in 1817. The first Lake George steamboat was the James Caldwell. The James Caldwell burned at her berth at Caldwell in 1821.

The Minne-Ha-Ha launched in the spring of 1857, and resembled modern steamboats. She had two decks and a capacity of about 400 passengers. The Minne-Ha-Ha was the last wood-burner on the lake with round trip requiring 6 cords of wood.

Following the Civil War, the Steamboat Company became part of the Delaware and Hudson Railroad System. The railroad owned and operated the Lake George passenger boats for 68 years (1871-1939). During this time, the Sagamore and the Horicon II were built.

The Great Depression of the 1930s drastically reduced the Lake George passenger business and the advent of World War II brought the boat business to its knees. The Sagamore was scrapped in 1937, and then the Horicon. The Company’s remaining vessel, the Mohican, was sold to Captain George Stafford and ran a limited summer schedule during the war years.

Captain Wilbur Dow renovated the Mohican in 1947; brought a World War II vessel onto the lake in three sections and converted her to passenger service as the Ticonderoga in 1950; and built out the Steel Pier in Lake George Village in 1954 to the boundaries of the company's land grant from King George III of England. He again renovated the Mohican in 1967, built the sternwheeler Minne-Ha-Ha in 1969 and, following an eleven-year construction effort, placed the Lac du Saint Sacrement in service in 1989.

To celebrate, bring your family to The King's Garden at Fort Ticonderoga for Harvest Day on September 17 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Travel Tips: Road Work Ahead

Road work is a particularly sensitive topic in the North Country these days. Not only is the well-planned construction on I-90 in and around Albany in full swing this summer, but heavy rains early this summer caused mud slides along the Northway, I-87 north of Lake George requiring ongoing construction. And a dam break in Fort Ann caused Route 149 to Vermont to be closed for a period, with ongoing improvement measures to the area. Be sure to stay informed of the latest traffic information. Our favorite website is local television news website, Capital News 9. Check out their traffic information to plan your trip to be safe and hassle-free well ahead of time. And another tip - they offer great graphics and weather web cameras, so you can get a glimpse at your forecast while you are there!

Value of the month: Spotlight on Education

Fort Ticonderoga is sponsoring its Third Annual Teacher Open House on Saturday, September 17 from 9:00 - 3:00. All teachers with a valid school I.D. or a letter of introduction on school letterhead from their principal will receive complimentary admission along with their immediate family. The day provides an introduction to Fort Ticonderoga for teachers wishing to enrich their classroom teaching.
