Spotlight on history: What's in a name?

Lake George village was first named "Caldwell" for General James Caldwell. Known as the "Queen of American Lakes," Lake George reaches 32 miles into an area that is rich in history.

Though a family resort area today, the region was once an important battleground, during both the French & Indian and Revolutionary wars. James Fenimore Cooper used the battle at Fort William Henry as the basis for his book The Last of the Mohicans.

Native Indians called the lake "Andia-ta-roc-te" (meaning "Where the Lake is Shut In"). Later Father Issac Jogues renamed the lake"Lac du St. Sacrament." In 1646, Sir William Johnson gave the lake its present name for his King, George II of England. Cooper unsuccessfully campaigned to rename the lake "Horicon" arguing Jogues naming was too difficult to say, and Johnson's naming too commonplace.

Travel Tips: Road Work Ahead

Road work is a particularly sensitive topic in the North Country these days. Not only is the well-planned construction on I-90 in and around Albany in full swing this summer, but heavy rains early this summer caused mud slides along the Northway, I-87 north of Lake George requiring ongoing construction. And a dam break in Fort Ann caused Route 149 to Vermont to be closed, just recently reopened. Be sure to stay informed of the latest traffic information. Our favorite website is local television news website, Capital News 9. Check out their traffic information to plan your trip to be safe and hassle-free well ahead of time. And another tip - they offer great graphics and weather web cameras, so you can get a glimpse at your forecast while you are there!

Value of the month:

Take advantage of offerings from the Lake George Association. This month, free family events include Creek Critters (explore a stream to find cool creatures), Birds and Bats, BUGS! (Ants and Mayflies and Bees, Oh My!), and Wildlife in the Watershed. The LGA also offers weekly floating classroom trips onto Lake George for a small fee. Learn how to register at www.lakegeorgeassociation.org.

Did you know?

There is an archeological dig at Fort William Henry August 1-26, 2005. The museum contains many artifacts discovered during archeological digs at the site and search of the lake near the fort. Tours of the Fort are offered daily to get a glimpse into life at the fort and learn more about the famous battle during the French & Indian War, which is honored for its 250 anniversary this year.
